A Day in the Life: Director of SaaS Operations
  January 24, 2018

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work with us? Recently, our Director of Saas Operations, Martin Loewinger, took over our Instagram account to show our followers what an average day on our DevOps team is like.

Afterwards, I got the chance to chat with him to learn more about why he loves #lifeatsb. Check out the interview below to learn more about Martin.

Introduce yourself.

My name is Martin, and I am the Director of SaaS Operations for SmartBear. I have been leading the DevOps teams who support our 4 SaaS products, SwaggerHub, AlertSite, Cross Browser Testing and QAComplete since June of 2016.

What’s your favorite thing about working at SmartBear?

I have to say my absolute favorite thing about working at SmartBear is the people I get to interact with on a regular basis. I work with Senior VP’s, Product Managers, Directors of Development and even some founders of the products. I have learned so much from each of them, and we have just started to scratch the surface. They are all focused on making great products for our customers, but we make sure we are having fun while doing so.

How do you start your day?

To be honest, I start my day before I leave the house. I check my emails for daily SLA reports, and open some key monitors and systems to see the states of our applications. I make a list of the key things I want to deal with once I get into the office.

How would you describe the culture?

I would say the culture at SmartBear is open and collaborative, but like our products, it is always evolving. I’m located in our Coconut creek, FL office which is small and quiet, but close. We all know each other. We hang out every Wednesday for lunch in our kitchen. We play ping pong together almost on a daily basis. Since SmartBear has many different offices, I also get to work remotely with someone in almost every office around the world.

What is the best part about your role?

The best part of my role is leading a team that gets to work on cutting edge technologies. We get to make decisions on the infrastructure, and even implement them.

What is the most challenging thing about your role?

I would say the most challenging part of my role is working with individuals in all different time zones. I have to constantly look at the world clock on my mac to make sure I don’t ping someone who actually may be home already.

What do you usually do for lunch?

I usually try to watch what I eat, so I bring lunch with me most days. We do have lunch as an office together every Wednesday which allows everyone from development, DevOps, Sales and Support to get together in the Kitchen and just shoot the breeze for an hour.

What are your coworkers like?

I would say my co-workers are passionate. They want to build, support or sell our great products.

Does your office offer any fun perks? What are they?

Besides lunch together on Wednesday’s, we bring in breakfast every Friday. The office has a ping pong table, and we have the best snacks stocked from any office. From cookies, crackers, chips, chocolate, candies and sodas we all have an awesome selection.

What do you do to unwind after work?

I am blessed to come home to a teenager in high school, a tween in middle school and a 6 year old in 1st grade, so after they all go to bed, I get to catch up some shows with my beautiful wife.

What would you say to someone thinking about working at SmartBear?

I would say if you are looking for a real challenge, a place where you can grow, learn new things and get along with your peers and even senior management, then SmartBear is the place for you.

What advice do you have for someone joining the SmartBear team?

The best advice I could give anyone joining SmartBear would be, get to know as many people as you can. Build strong relationships, because everyone is willing to help you out, and answer any questions you may have. It’s important you build those relationships, so when you have a question you won’t be afraid to ask.

Prior to joining SmartBear, I didn’t know that it is a very special place. It wasn’t until after I interviewed and met with so many people from the CEO to DevOps engineers, that I realized SmartBear was actually special. I was excited when the opportunity was given to me to join, and I am thankful every day for accepting it. It truly is an awesome place to work.

That’s a wrap on an average day as a member of our DevOps team! Think this sounds like you? We aren’t hiring in Coconut Creek, FL, but we have opportunities available in our other offices! Check out open roles in Boston, Stockholm, and Galway.
