SmartBear Developer Academy – FAQ for Interviews

What is the SmartBear Developer Academy?

An entry-level training program that will prepare you with the hands-on skills and confidence you need to be a successful developer. The Academy is intended to ensure the success of your career and career progression at SmartBear and will teach you the critical skills necessary to effectively work with our product teams. You will get a mix of technical skills, process skills, and real-time work experience with our product teams.
How long is the program? What are my employment terms during the Academy program?

The program is 12-weeks long made up of online, in-classroom, and practical learning. During the first 12 weeks of employment the contract would be a “contract of mandate”. After graduating from the program, it would be a “contract of employment.”
Who will I report to during the Academy program?

During the first 12 weeks, your manager will be the Development L&D Training Manager. They will work closely with you and your project team lead to ensure you have everything you need to be successful.
What technical skills and process skills will be covered in the Academy?

Technical skills for this program include Ruby, Java, Cloud, and Database. Note that exposure to other technical skills and languages will take place when assigned to a specific product team.

Process skills and tooling for this program include Agile, Jira, and other collaboration tools used at SmartBear, such as Miro.
Will I be working with SmartBear’s product teams throughout the Academy?

Yes, the program is designed for you to collaborate with our developer teams.
What does it take to graduate from the Academy program? What happens when I graduate?

Graduating from the academy means you have met the requirements presented to you throughout the program. This consists of finishing the required course work, participating in the classroom training, and receiving a recommendation from the product team lead and the L&D Academy manager.
What will my day-to-day job look like after the Academy?

In your day-to-day as a software engineer, you’ll likely spend your time writing code, collaborating with team members and planning future projects. Most software engineers work on a team made up of other developers, automation engineers, product managers, UI/UX, and you will get to interact with them all.
What’s the compensation structure for this career path?

Our comp structure for the program starts all applicants at 96,600 PLN or 8,000 PLN monthly. Graduates of the program will have an increase in base salary and will be moved to a contract of employment at a base of 102,000PLN or 8,500 PLN monthly. As you gain skill and knowledge you will continue to build your monthly income.
When and how will I be permanently assigned to a product team/product group? Which product groups are included in this program?

We determine the match by assessing the participant's skills, interests, and potential. API Functional Testing and Zephyr will participate in the program.
Does SmartBear have an office in Wroclaw? What’s the expectation for going into the office during the Academy and after the Academy program?

Yes, SmartBear has an office in the Business Garden in Wroclaw. During the program, we expect that individuals will be in the office Monday through Friday. We will update the team on any change in those expectations once we kick off the program.
