From Google Maps, to Yelp, to the social buttons on the left side of this page, Web APIs are everywhere! And it doesn't look like their growth will be slowing anytime soon. Truthfully, APIs have become a necessity for almost any successful site, including e-commerce sites, which use them to combine Web services and contextual information for a more compelling user experience.
By 2014, Gartner predicts that 75% of the Fortune 1000 will offer public Web APIs. Also by 2014, all consumer-facing enterprises (and many that aren't) will treat a public Web API as equally important to a public website.
Since it brought on Marrissa Mayer, even Yahoo! has hinted that they plan to pivot away from publishing and focus more on mobilization and partnering with other tech companies, essentially turning them into an API company.
With all this growth, maintaining API quality has become mission-critical to delivering superior user experiences, meeting contractual obligations with partners and reaching business goals. But development, IT/Ops and e-commerce teams frequently run into issues ensuring API quality development through deployment.
In the video below, Ole Lensmar, Niclas Reimertz, Henrik Johansson and Erik Yverling from SmartBear-Sweden explain the API revolution that is quietly growing behind the scenes all across the Internet, and outline exactly why testing APIs is so crucial.
