Beverly, MA — November 24, 2014 — SmartBear Software
, the choice of more than two million software professionals for building and delivering the world’s best applications, released its second annual report, “The 2014 State of Code Review
,” revealing results of its extensive study on the industry’s peer code review practices, software quality and how the two are related. Over 550 participated in the study that disclosed the level of code review adoption and practices, how code review impacts quality and other facts. The survey revealed that developers, testers, managers and end users agree that code review is #1 in improving software quality.
“As the leader in code review tools and an advocate for helping software developers to improve software quality, we work to learn what practices are being followed in the industry,” said Mark Hammer
, Senior Product Director at SmartBear. “For the second year in a row, the survey has confirmed code review serves as a critical development practice to the organizations with the greatest level of software quality. We expect the report will be useful to organizations that want to measure their code review practices against the industry benchmark.”
Over 80 percent of survey respondents said the most important benefit of code review is improved software quality, followed by the ability to mentor less tenured developers, enhanced maintainability of code, adherence to coding standards, increased collaboration, reduced project time and cost, and more. Based on the results of the survey, tool-based code review is used most widely by the game development industry, software, consulting/systems integrators, medical devices, healthcare and aerospace/defense.
