Velocity Santa Clara 2014: 4 APM Takeaways from SmartBear CMO, Bryan Semple

As someone from the virtualization management space, Velocity Santa Clara gave me my first opportunity to spend a lot of time with developers, operations managers, and others who are responsible for keeping their applications up and running. Here is a quick summary of what I learned:

Developer and Tester APM Interest – Our SoapUI Pro (API Testing) customers are many times linked into the Dev/Ops team – I was interested to see how many people came by our booth and told us that while they didn't use AlertSite UXM, they were SoapUI customers, and wanted to learn more about our APM offering. SoapUI users usually tend to be developers or testers, and both groups seemed equally engaged in the APM solution. Often times when SoapUI customers show interest in AlertSite UXM it is frequently in relation to API Monitoring, which is enabled through a direct integration between AlertSite UXM and SoapUI. This time around however, other APM capabilities such as code-level synthetic transaction tracing and load testing where equally as popular among our developer and tester SoapUI users.

Hodgepodge of Tools – Very rarely did someone tell us they were a “New Relic shop” or a “Compuware shop”. Quite the opposite. Almost everyone we talked with had multiple systems, each doing a separate piece of the APM puzzle. When these people found out that our solution unifies load, synthetic and real all in a single platform, they couldn’t wait to see it -- luckily we came prepared with 5 fully loaded AlertSite UXM demo stations.

Pricing Issues are Real – one customer of a competitor came by and said they were dropping $1M+ per year on application monitoring software (for just one piece of their APM puzzle). They were not a behemoth in size, so the expense really shocked us. Fast time to value will be important for all customers.

Innovation – our CTO for AlertSite UXM was with us at the booth. Besides coding a Pebble Watch app that provided site statistics with a shake of the wrist over the weekend, he has also been busy coding up some interesting new javascript monitoring tools. There is still a ton of innovation left in this area. We are just getting started.

We will be at Velocity New York in the Fall. If you didn’t stop by to see us in Santa Clara, you can grab a trial of AlertSite UXM here. You can also check out a video overview of our new synthetic release with code-level transaction tracing here.
