5 API Experts on the State of APIs in 2016
Test and Monitor | Posted March 18, 2016

Earlier this year, SmartBear Software released a new industry report looking at the growth, challenges, and opportunities for the API industry in 2016.

The State of API 2016 Report, included input from  over 2,300 software developers, testers, IT/operations professionals and business leaders representing more than 50 industries and 104 countries.

Since the report launched, we’ve been digging into the findings to share key insights for API providers and organizations that depend on APIs to power their applications.

Some of the key takeaways from the report include:

  • 1 in 5 API providers began providing within the last two years
  • Mobile, IoT, and enterprise integrations will be key drivers of future growth
  • Loss of customers and brand reputation are viewed as the biggest risks of poor API quality
  • Less than 10% of API issues are resolved within 24 hours; 55% are resolved within a week

You can take a deeper dive into our findings here:

On March 23, we’ll be bringing together a panel of experts to discuss the findings of the State of API 2016 Report.

Webinar panelists include:

In preparation of the panel discussion on March 23, we asked each of the speakers to share their key takeaways from the report and to share some insight into the current state of the API industry.

Here’s what they had to say:

Lorinda Headshot Blog“Concerns about performance, integration and security indicate a maturation of the business models and expectations for APIs. As large enterprises enter this space, they face specific challenges in all of those areas that will lead the API industry forward as we try to figure out solutions together.”

Lorinda Brandon, Sr. Product Manager, API Product Strategy at Capital One

Ole Headshot Blog“As APIs continue to make their way into the heart of corporate value chains, it is reassuring to see a continuous focus on improving the quality of both internal and external APIs - especially within the security and performance domains which are most critical for the success of both API providers and consumers.”

Ole Lensmar, SmartBear, CTO and founder of SoapUI

Tony Headshot Blog“APIs have broad implications across an organization. Depending on the approach, as well as the business itself, API implementation strategies typically have strengths as well as areas for improvement. The SmartBear API research has brought up very interesting areas of focus for both consumers and providers.”

Tony Tam, VP of Products and founder of Swagger

Paul Bruce Headshot Blog“APIs are a cornerstone technology for all modern industries and digital economies, so it's important to understand the dynamics between the teams that deliver APIs. The challenges they face and growth opportunities they anticipate are key indicators of whether we'll see success in one area or decline in another. This report is a unique glimpse into some of those dynamics in the API market, one that we're glad to share with the rest of the industry.”

Paul Bruce, API Product Manager

Priyanka Headshot Blog“When it comes to the expectations of performance and quality, APIs are not so different from other online assets like websites, Web apps and mobile apps. They need to be up and running at all times, need to perform within a threshold defined by the consumer and need to be functionally correct for all end users. Whether you are using APIs to generate revenue, increase collaboration or reduce costs – APIs need to function properly at all times.”

Priyanka Tiwari, Product Manager
