SmartBear Study Hall: Getting Started with QAComplete
Welcome to our first SmartBear Study Hall weekly blog post brought to you by SmartBear Academy, our free product training program. This week we will be diving deeper into getting started with QAComplete. The information shared in this blog is an excerpt from the QAComplete onboarding guide.

Mastering and understanding these topics will help you become more familiar using QAComplete day-to-day. Question: What modules in QAComplete will I frequently use?
Answer: Great question! Releases; organize your data, Requirements; track your feature requests and enhancements, Tests; full traceability to ensure complete test coverage of Requirements and Defects, and Defects; automatically generated during a test run and linked to the failed Test.
Easy stuff, right?
Well great news, you have now passed the beginner stage of QAComplete knowledge. Next, understanding how a team will be developing a product and the overall workflow process is important knowledge to get under your belt.
Let’s learn a little more.
Creating Releases, Requirements, Tests, Defects
- Organize your data by Release, Iteration, and or Build with the Releases module.
- Give a specific name to your Release and a date range.
- After creating your first Release, you can add Sprints or Iterations to it.
- Track your feature requests and enhancements with Requirements.
- Tests are organized into Test Sets; your team can run the Tests in consistent logical order.
- First create your Tests, then Define your Test Sets.
- Now your team is ready to run Test Sets and post results. Defects are created automatically if a Test in the run fails.
- Defects are added the same way as Requirements or Tests.
Linking Items for Traceability
- This helps with cross-referencing. You can access this from the Edit form for any item, or from the Actions drop down on the List of Items by selecting Show Traceability. This enables you to reference a specific Defect that links to a Test.
Configuring Users and Security Groups
- This allows you to give permission to your team to have different levels of access for different Projects. What is great is that you can allow Read Only Access for specific team members only based on the Project.
- Establishing roles on your teams is important and should be a first step when you are getting started with QAComplete.
