This month we hosted a Chili Cook-Off at our HQ in Somerville as a fundraiser for the Greater Boston Food Bank’s annual Holiday Meal Drive. With 15 chili chefs there was more than a few varieties to try, everything from chipotle chili, to vegetarian chili, to chicken chili and even a chili with tatertots on top! The premise of this event was simple, to participate (i.e. try the delicious chili and cast a vote) we asked our colleagues to make either a non-perishable food or monetary donation. The result was nothing short of inspiring, we raised $1,245 and donated 140 boxes of stuffing and 223 cans of gravy!
The energy of the event was palpable with employees from across the organization participating. There was buzz around predictions on who would win as well as watching the donation count quickly rise. In just over an hour we raised over a thousand dollars and several stocked boxes of food donations. Everyone left with full tummies and a renewed excitement for being a SmartBear!
Drumroll please… and the winners were…
1st place – Zach Cantin, Bumdrum Chili
2nd place – Tie! Kirsta Payne, Netflix and Chili and Bruno Mazzotta, Spicy Southwestern Chicken Chili
3rd place – Brendan Campbell, Habanero Heaven
All donations were brought to the East End House Pantry in Cambridge. Through their holiday event, they provided 1,200 families with a produce bag and a turkey or turkey voucher. With this group providing a full Thanksgiving dinner, you may be wondering why we were so specific on our donations. Earlier this month, Shari McGrath, a fellow SmartBear, volunteered at the East End House Pantry where she learned of their urgent need of stuffing and gravy.
This event is just one of the many events SmartBear does to give back to the community. Check out some of our other initiatives Manis for a Cure, Mystic River Watershed Association and Rosie’s Place.
