Website monitoring tools are crucial when dealing with public safety
Develop | Posted August 26, 2011

Usually when we talk about website performance, we highlight the impact of a website outage or slowdown on business performance—drops in traffic, disgruntled customers and lost revenue. But sometimes, the repercussions can be even more serious.

Earlier today, TechCrunch reported that NYC.gov is down. Let me repeat: With Hurricane Irene hurdling up the Eastern Coast, causing the evacuation of coastal regions in various states, the most logical public safety resource for New York City’s nearly 19 million residents is unavailable. That’s no small deal.

So while we often talk about the impact of website performance on Internet retailers and other businesses, those responsible for disseminating mission-critical information to the public should heed our advice as well. Take a page from the American Red Cross’s book and monitor website performance. You never know when website availability and quick response times could just help save lives.
