The Magic of Requirements Traceability in ALMComplete
You know that particular feature request – the one your team has been demanding for weeks, if not months. It’s ready! QA just approved it and Ops is about to release it. But you don’t remember every single person that requested it, do you? Of course not! So how are you supposed to let your key stakeholders and customers know?
Well, if you’re tracking with ALMComplete, this problem is already solved for you! Using Traceability, you can tell exactly who made the request and when they made it. And you can let everyone know with a quick email.
Your feature requests might come in through:
- the support manager, where they automatically flow into defects
- Adding them directly into your backlog in requirements
- A custom list for “Use Cases”
It really doesn’t matter where they're coming from. Once you have the request recorded, you can organize them in any fashion you like. Just create a master requirement and use "Link To Items" to link up your defects, related requirements, or list items to the master requirement. As repeat requests come in – and we know they do – link up to the master requirement and you’re good to go.

Ready to work on that feature? Set up your release schedule, link the master requirement to the release or sprint, and let your team run with it!
And when the feature is done? Well, then you go ahead and take a look at the master requirement. Go to the requirements tab, select your release (or sprint) - the requirements you planned for that sprint show up in the list on the right. See the word "Traceability" in the dark blue toolbar next to "Show Requirements"? Click it.
The list is going to change slightly. Right below each requirement is a count of items, grouped by item type. Let’s say you have a dozen defects from the support manager linked up to the requirement. The link says "12 Defects (All Enhancement Requests)." Click it.
You're looking at the traceability screen, where you see the list of requests linked to your master requirement.
Now you can review each request and use "Send Email" to send out your notifications. What’s also great is that, by using the "Send Email" function, your email is recorded as a note right on the request. You can follow up with everybody involved, plus have it all recorded and right at your fingertips.
