Meet the Bears: Will West
Develop | Posted May 12, 2010

Will
In the middle of all of our crazy office adventures stands one (very) tall guy, Will West. You've seen him launch water balloons off the balcony with the rest of the bears and eat a giant donut, but those are only a few examples of all the fun he contributes to the office. Sharing his unique theories, hilarious jokes, and latest hijinks, he always makes the bears laugh. He's also one heck of a developer, which is why you should read his interview!

What is your "Job Title"?
I was hired as something like "Junior Developer" a couple of years ago. Given the other Bears' answers, I probably ought to answer "King".

Describe a typical day for you at the office.

I check the birdseed outside the window to see if it needs refilled, refresh my email, and hopefully sit down to a red unit test to help get me in the flow. Break for lunch, do a code review, grab my next task out of the queue.

Where were you and what did you do before Smart Bear?

I lived in Pittsburgh PA, working for the city on internal applications. Frick park was undoubtedly myp favorite part of the city. I spent many days hiking around there with my wife, puppy and often ice cleats.

How did you come to Smart Bear?

Craigslist. I was going through the jobs listed in Austin and I saw one that demanded "an inhuman ability to bend the compiler to your will".

What is your favorite thing about Smart Bear?

I know everybody's name.

Any interesting stories at Smart Bear?

Tons! Everything from the horrors j_security_check to how I refuse to write a blog entry until somebody brings me chocolate covered bacon. I particularly like coming up with silly names for internal issues - the multi-button-bonker-bug was less painful because it was so fun to say.

What are some of your favorite websites?

Amazon, Wikipedia, XKCD

What are your favorite activities?p Hobbies?

Sailing, Jiu Jitsu, Target shooting, Camping, and soon I'm going to try stand-up paddle boarding.

Favorite music bands?

The Raconteurs for modern, Quiet Riot for classic, Feist for naps, and I'm kind of getting into Metric.

Favorite spots in Austin?

Barton Springs, Redbud Isle, Town Lake Trail, Shangri-La, Whole Foods Downtown, anyplace with sandwiches.
